Fixed support at both ends is commonly achieved using two angular contact ball bearings or tapered roller bearings placed symmetrically. These bearings are designed to axially locate one of the bearing rings, ensuring an appropriate clearance or preloading. This configuration is particularly suitable for applications where high axial stiffness and precision are required, such as in machine tool spindles or bevel gear shafts. In principle, these bearings can be arranged in either O-type or X-type configurations. In the O-type setup, the cone pole S (the midpoint of the load effect formed by the intersection of the contact points) lies outside the bearing set, while in the X-type, the S point is located inside. The distance between the two load effects in the O-type is greater than in the X-type, which results in less skew caused by play. When setting up the axial clearance, it's important to account for thermal expansion. In X-type arrangements, the temperature gradient from the shaft to the housing typically reduces the bearing clearance. On the other hand, the O-type arrangement has three different scenarios. When the rolling cone pole R (the extension line of the outer raceway) coincides with the bearing centerline, the clearance remains stable under thermal conditions. If the two bearings are close together, their rolling cone poles R intersect, causing the axial clearance to decrease as temperature increases. However, when the bearings are spaced apart, the cone poles do not intersect, leading to an increase in axial clearance with rising temperatures. This method is widely used in high-performance machinery where precise control over axial movement and thermal behavior is essential. Proper selection and installation of FAG bearings in a fixed support configuration can significantly enhance the reliability and lifespan of mechanical systems.
