Fudan University develops a new battery that can be bent

Recently, the team of Wang Yonggang of Fudan University and Peng Huisheng team developed a new type of flexible battery. Its design focuses on the mechanical stress requirements of wearable electronic devices and the safety requirements of implanted devices. Related research was published in the "Chemical" journal of the Cell Publishing Group.

"Current batteries, such as lithium-ion batteries used for medical implants, are usually rigid." Wang Yonggang said, "In addition, most flexible batteries use flammable or corrosive electrolytes, which pose both security risks and risks. Wearable devices have poor biocompatibility, let alone implanted batteries."

The researchers designed two types of flexible batteries: a 2D ribbon battery and a 1D fibrous battery. The former can adhere thin and light electrode films in a steel wire mesh, and the latter can embed nanoparticles of electrode materials around a carbon nanotube skeleton. In addition to testing biocompatible liquids, the researchers also tested the suitability of sodium sulfate as a liquid electrolyte for wearable device batteries.

The results show that when using sodium sulphate solution as the electrolyte, the two new batteries have better capacity and output power than the lithium ion batteries most currently reported for wearable devices.

In addition, carbon nanotubes used in 1D cells can accelerate the conversion of dissolved oxygen to hydroxide ions. This process, if uncontrolled, can harm the effectiveness of the cell, but it has the potential to treat cancer and bacterial infections.

"We could implant these fibrous electrodes into the body to consume basic oxygen, especially for those injectable drugs. We hope to further study this hypothesis with biologists and medical scientists," said Wang Yonggang.
