The action mechanism and selection principle of plastic lubricant

A lubricant is a substance that improves the fluidity during polymer molding. The melt of the resin is usually very high in viscosity. During the molding, the melt must enter the cavity by nozzles, gates and runners in a very short time, in order to allow the melt to be filled smoothly in a very short time. The cavity, reducing the viscosity of the melt and improving the fluidity of the melt are critical. This is the effect of adding a lubricant. In addition, the lubricant promotes melting, facilitates demolding, prevents static electricity, and prevents adhesion. Let us look at the working principle of the lubricant and how to choose:
Mechanism of action of lubricant
The reason why the lubricant can be lubricated is because it is added to reduce the friction of the plastic melt. This friction is divided into internal friction and external friction. There is accordingly an internal lubricant and an external lubricant.
1. The role of the external lubricant is mainly to improve the friction condition of the hot metal surface of the polymer melt and the equipment, so that the plastic part is easily demoulded, and its compatibility with the polymer is poor, and it is easy to migrate from the melt. During the molding process, a very thin separator can be formed between the melt and the mold so that the plastic does not stick to the mold surface.
2. The internal lubricant has good compatibility with the polymer. It plays a role in reducing the cohesive force between the polymer molecules inside the polymer, thereby improving the internal friction heat generation and melt fluidity of the plastic melt. The combination of the inner lubricant and the polymer long-chain molecules is not strong, they may produce a function similar to a rolling bearing, so they can be aligned in the direction of the melt flow, thereby sliding each other, so that the internal friction is reduced, which is The mechanism of internal lubrication.
Use of lubricant
There are quite a variety of lubricants. Commonly used external lubricants are paraffin, stearic acid and its salts; internal lubricants have relatively low molecular weight PE, PTFE, PP and the like. These low molecular weight polymers are not only excellent internal lubricants, but also good external lubricants. Sometimes, the effect of a lubricant is often unsatisfactory, requiring the use of several lubricants, which results in a composite lubricant that can play a multifaceted role. Better results. The amount of lubricant used is generally from 0.5% to 1%.
When choosing a lubricant, the following principles should be followed:
1. If the fluidity of the polymer can meet the needs of the molding process, it is mainly considered whether the external lubricant satisfies the process requirements and whether it is easy to demold to ensure internal and external balance.
2. Whether the external lubrication is ideal, it should be seen whether it can form a complete liquid film on the plastic surface during molding. Therefore, the melting point of the external lubricant should be close to the molding temperature, but it should be noted that there is a difference of 10-30 °C. In order to form a complete film.
3, the compatibility with the polymer is moderate, the internal and external lubrication is balanced, no frosting, not easy to scale.
4. The lubricant has excellent heat resistance and chemical stability, does not decompose during processing, does not volatilize, does not corrode equipment, does not pollute the product, and has no toxicity.
