The film developed this time can make large and high-speed telescopic movements with a small change in humidity, and can sense minute changes in humidity that cannot be detected by general hygrometers, thereby efficiently converting local humidity changes into kinetic energy. This film can even convert environmental fluctuations such as light and heat that affect moisture absorption into energy.

Although there have been reports previously on the development of humidity-responsive materials, their flexion and extension reactions are slow, and they require very high humidity conditions and cannot be converted into kinetic energy under normal circumstances. The research team used a polymer film that did not absorb moisture, but the material part was designed with a water-absorbing structure. When the film is made, the polymer is properly aligned, and large-scale telescopic motion can be achieved by absorbing very little moisture. The research team gilded a part of the film and used the humidity fluctuations around the water droplet as a driving force to successfully develop a unidirectional motion actuator. The film can respond to changes in the environment at high speed and can flex, jump at high speed when exposed to strong light.
