A new breakthrough promotes the development of organic electronics

Organic electronics is an evolving aspect in the field of science and technology. International research teams from Princeton University, Georgia Institute of Technology and Humboldt University in Berlin have just published a new study exploring organic semiconductors in the journal Nature Materials.

These organic semiconductor materials are being applied to future technologies faster and faster, such as flexible electronic devices, advanced device displays, and even solar energy conversion. However, organic materials are not known for their useful electronic properties.

To overcome this problem, scientists have "doped" certain chemicals in organic materials to improve their electrical quality in some way. In this study, researchers discovered a powerful new dopant in organic semiconductors that can add electrons to carbon-based materials and increase their electrical conductivity by one million times.

This new type of dopant consists of pairs of molecules containing deuterium. Researchers can use ultraviolet light to activate these molecules. To the surprise of the researchers, once they had activated the dopant, it would still be activated even after the UV was turned off.

This magical new dopant is not only extremely stable, but it can also work in organic semiconductors that are either solid or in solution. "Organic semiconductors are ideal materials for the manufacture of mechanically flexible equipment with energy-saving cryogenic processes," said PhD student Xin Lin from the Princeton University research team at a press conference.
