Electro-ophthalmia, also known as welder's flash, is a condition caused by excessive exposure of the corneal epithelium and conjunctiva to intense ultraviolet (UV) radiation from welding arcs. This can occur when workers are exposed for long periods in open areas such as deserts, salt flats, or large surfaces without proper eye protection. The UV light from the sun or welding equipment can cause acute inflammation, leading to discomfort and potential damage to the eyes.
The symptoms typically appear within 6 to 8 hours after exposure. Affected individuals may experience a sudden burning sensation, severe eye pain, sensitivity to light (photophobia), excessive tearing, swelling of the eyelids, headaches, and a burning feeling on the face and eyelids. The conjunctiva may become red and swollen, indicating an inflammatory response.
Treatment focuses on relieving pain, reducing inflammation, and preventing infection. One recommended method is applying cold compresses to the eyes, encouraging the patient to keep their eyes closed and using a damp, cool cloth over the eyelids. Another option is using fresh human milk as eye drops—three to five drops per eye, with the eyes kept closed for three to five minutes after each application, repeated every two hours. In addition, antibiotic eye drops such as chloramphenicol or ointments like erythromycin can be used to prevent secondary infections.
It’s important to note that human milk, eye drops, and ointments should not be used together at the same time; there should be a short interval between applications. Wearing protective sunglasses during treatment is also advised. Prevention remains the most effective strategy against electro-ophthalmia. Welders should always follow safety protocols, including the use of proper eye protection such as automatic filter masks. Most patients recover within one to three days without long-term damage, but repeated or prolonged exposure to UV radiation can lead to chronic conditions like blepharitis.
Prevention is key. Always wear a high-quality welding mask with an automatic shade to protect your eyes from harmful UV rays. Proper training and adherence to safety guidelines can significantly reduce the risk of this painful condition. If symptoms persist or worsen, seek medical attention promptly.
