Heliatek Transparent Solar Cell Sets New Energy Efficiency Record

Heliatek GmbH, a pioneer in organic solar film technology, has achieved a breakthrough in the performance of transparent solar cells. The latest development features a solar cell with 40% light transmittance and an energy efficiency rate exceeding 7%, setting a new global benchmark. This follows the company’s previous record of 12% efficiency for opaque organic solar cells. This advancement aligns with Heliatek’s strategic vision to provide glass manufacturers with transparent HeliaFilm™ technology for building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) and roofing applications. According to CEO Thibaud Le Seguillon, “Transparency is central to our business model. HeliaFilm™ can be customized to meet the specific needs of our partners. As a component supplier, we offer a thin film that combines light transmission with electricity generation—this unique feature significantly expands our market opportunities.” In both architectural and automotive applications, colored glass helps reduce glare, but thin films like HeliaFilm™ offer an additional benefit: power generation. Integrating HeliaFilm™ into glass roofs not only generates clean energy but also helps automakers earn eco-innovation credits and meet CO₂ reduction goals. Similarly, building facades and windows embedded with HeliaFilm™ allow natural light to enter while simultaneously producing electricity. The latest generation of organic solar cells has achieved a 7.2% energy efficiency at 40% transmittance, measured under standard test conditions on a white background. Heliatek has successfully optimized its transparent HeliaFilm™ for maximum energy conversion. While their opaque solar cells currently reach 12% efficiency, the transparent version achieves comparable output by utilizing 60% of incoming light for energy harvesting. The balance between transparency and power generation can be fine-tuned based on application requirements. This is made possible through the use of a transparent conductive layer on both sides of the solar cell, enabling the production of HeliaFilm™. The technology relies on small molecules, or oligomers, which are deposited at low temperatures using a roll-to-roll vacuum process. This allows for selective absorption of the solar spectrum, enabling the creation of different colors and levels of light transmission.
