The biomass pellets, as thin as a pencil and cylindrical in shape, measure about two to three centimeters in length. At first glance, they resemble feed, but this is not for animals—it’s for boilers. These are actually biomass pellet fuels, an eco-friendly alternative that is gaining traction across various industries. Reporters learned that more and more companies are transitioning to clean energy to meet urban environmental standards and improve economic efficiency. This shift spans sectors like textiles, food processing, chemicals, and other traditional industries.
One of the popular raw materials used in biomass fuel is the palm shell. Shishi Yongning, a textile company, invested over 300,000 yuan last July to replace its old coal-fired boiler with a "chain biomass boiler," eliminating coal use. Similarly, the Land Group in Shishi upgraded its boilers, spending between 50,000 to 60,000 yuan per unit, switching from coal to palm shells. Palm shells, once discarded, have become a valuable biofuel after being successfully utilized by a Malaysian company in 2005 and later adopted by European countries.
After drying, palm shells can be directly burned without additional processing. Their heat value ranges from 4,600 to 5,000 kcal/kg, higher than most conventional biofuels. According to officials at Quanzhou Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau, many enterprises now source their palm shells domestically, while some even import them from Indonesia through Fujian ports. With growing demand, imported palm shells are expected to become the norm.
Biomass fuel offers significant advantages. As cities push for cleaner environments, coal is being phased out, and alternatives such as electricity, diesel, natural gas, or biomass fuels are becoming common. Compared to these, biomass fuels offer better economic returns. Wang Zhenquan, general manager of Quanzhou Hengxing Energy Saving Technology Co., Ltd., shared an example: a four-ton oil-fired boiler requires about 88kg of heavy oil per ton of steam, costing roughly 418 yuan per ton. Switching to biomass can cut costs by up to 40%, saving around 250 yuan per ton. For a company consuming 500,000 yuan in fuel monthly, this could result in annual savings of 2.4 million yuan. Even compared to natural gas, biomass still holds an edge.
Beyond cost savings, biomass fuels significantly reduce pollution. Companies that previously used coal often faced issues with dust and ash. After switching, boiler rooms are now much cleaner. Replacing 10,000 tons of coal with palm shells annually can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by at least 161,000 tons, along with 150 tons of soot, 80 tons of sulfur dioxide, and 70 tons of nitrogen oxides.
Despite its benefits, biomass fuel comes with higher initial costs. Biomass pellets, for instance, may increase fuel costs by around 20%. However, long-term advantages include high calorific value, purity, and reduced labor needs. A traditional coal boiler might require four workers, but a biomass system only needs one. This improves working conditions and lowers labor costs.
Palm shells are particularly cost-effective, with prices around 80 USD per ton—10% to 15% lower than bituminous coal. Using them in a 15-ton chain boiler can save 1,200 tons of standard coal annually, earning companies national energy-saving awards of 300,000 to 500,000 yuan. To secure supply, Quanzhou-based companies have set up dozens of acquisition points in Southeast Asia. Still, supply remains limited compared to demand, which restricts the widespread adoption of this green fuel.
