On May 12–15, 2013, the 2013 China Climbing Technology and Equipment Seminar, themed “Development and Innovation,†took place at Suzhou Zhuhui Hotel. Organized by *Metal Processing Magazine* based in Beijing, the event was sponsored by Liji Culture Communication Co., Ltd. and supported by BLECH China (Maybus (Shanghai) Convention and Exhibition Co., Ltd.). This seminar provided a platform to showcase advanced metal processing technologies from both domestic and international sources, aligning with the broader context of the BLECH China 2013 exhibition.
During the seminar, Xu Zhenghong from Yizheng Shenwei Stamping Co., Ltd. delivered a presentation on the development direction of China’s automobile stamping parts industry. He outlined key challenges and opportunities for upgrading the sector.
First, he highlighted the difficulties in upgrading the automotive stamping industry. Due to the late start of China’s auto industry, many stamping enterprises are small-scale and lack strong technical capabilities. Several major challenges were identified:
1. OEMs still rely on fixed-point supporting models, limiting stamping companies’ ability to independently design and develop parts.
2. High-strength, ultra-high-strength, and hot-formed steel plates are mostly imported, as domestic steel producers like Baosteel are limited in this area.
3. Key equipment such as hot forming presses, servo presses, and multi-station presses are still in early stages of development or not yet available domestically.
4. High-value-added parts like thermoforming and internal high-pressure bulging are dominated by global auto parts manufacturers.
5. Many existing machines are outdated, with a large share of inefficient hydraulic presses.
6. Limited investment capacity and poor financing conditions hinder the adoption of new equipment and production lines.
Second, Xu emphasized the external environment that can support the growth of stamping enterprises. He suggested that collaboration among iron and steel companies, equipment manufacturers, and research institutes could accelerate the development of high-strength materials, new stamping technologies, and advanced machinery. Breakthroughs in these areas could help overcome foreign technology barriers and provide better technical support for China’s stamping industry.
He also urged the stamping equipment industry to promote automation knowledge, train skilled workers, and invest in new technologies and equipment. Improving product quality and offering automation upgrade services for existing equipment would help enterprises maximize their current resources. Additionally, exploring multiple funding channels—such as government support and private capital—could lead to the establishment of a stamping equipment finance company, similar to an auto finance model, to assist smaller enterprises in upgrading their facilities.
Third, Xu addressed the need for internal development within stamping parts companies. He recommended that enterprises focus on talent recruitment and training, improve quality control, and standardize internal operations. By leveraging business growth, companies should invest in new materials, processes, and equipment to make the most of technological advancements. For example, they could retrofit existing machines with automated systems to boost efficiency.
Finally, he pointed out the increasing trend of automakers integrating assembly processes. To adapt, stamping companies should collaborate with mold and welding firms, forming a complete industrial chain that includes mold fixtures, part production, and assembly. This integration would allow them to expand service offerings, strengthen independent product development, and enhance their resilience in the face of market fluctuations.
