Before and after rice heading, various pests and diseases often appear, requiring the use of chemical pesticides for control. However, during this critical growth phase, some pesticides can cause phytotoxicity, leading to unnecessary losses. Therefore, it's essential to be cautious and follow proper application guidelines.
First, triazolone is commonly used to manage rice blast and white leaf blight before heading. While effective, improper use can lead to shortening of the rice leaves and even severe stunting of the plant.
Second, diniconazole and similar compounds like 12% carbendazim WP are frequently used to control false smut in the early stages of heading. Overuse or incorrect application can result in difficulties with heading, such as delayed emergence or incomplete development of the panicle. This can lead to a condition known as "necking," where the rice fails to head properly.
Third, arsenic-based preparations should be used carefully. Improper application can lead to reduced seed set and lower yields.
Fourth, azole fungicides, including imidazole compounds, are widely used for controlling sheath blight. Products like Wensu, which combine oxazolyl and Jinggangmycin, or single agents like propiconazole and diniconazole (e.g., Heguoli, Manchu), have long-lasting effects—typically over 15 days. However, prolonged or excessive use can inhibit gibberellin production in rice, affecting internode elongation and causing heading difficulties, which ultimately impacts grain filling and fruiting.
Fifth, glyphosate is particularly dangerous when applied during the booting stage. If sprayed incorrectly on hybrid rice fields, it can cause complete failure of panicle development, resulting in yield losses of up to 80–100%. The young spike differentiation area is especially sensitive, and symptoms such as dead heart and abnormal ear formation may occur.
In summary, while pesticides are necessary for managing rice diseases and pests, their misuse during the heading stage can have serious consequences. Farmers must be well-informed about proper application methods, dosage, and timing to avoid damaging the crop and ensure optimal yields.
