Shanghai Institute of Ceramics

On July 19, 2013, the Summer Social Practice Group from the School of Materials Science and Engineering at Shanghai Jiaotong University made a visit to the Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Led by Mr. Wang Hao, a counselor from the School of Materials, the group included 13 students from various grade levels. The visit aimed to provide students with an opportunity to learn about cutting-edge research in materials science and gain insights into real-world applications. The group was warmly welcomed at the Changning Park of the institute by the director of the Personnel Department. The Shanghai Institute of Ceramics is a leading research institution in China, specializing in inorganic non-metallic materials. It combines basic research with high-tech innovation and applied development, making it a unique center for scientific exploration. The institute has two main campuses: Changning Park and Jiading New District, both equipped with state-of-the-art facilities that attract many students and researchers. During the visit, the students toured several laboratories, including the thin-film lithium battery research group, the biomedical materials and tissue functional materials lab, and the information molecular targeting materials and micro-structure research group. Researchers explained how materials play a crucial role in energy storage and medical advancements, showcasing the vast potential and impact of materials science in everyday life. In the Jiading New District, the group visited the Ceramic Crystal Information Testing Center. There, they learned about advanced magnetic ceramics that have reached world-class standards. They also saw the production of super-hard silicon carbide materials in the State Key Laboratory, which plays a vital role in national defense and economic development. Additionally, the latest environmental dust removal techniques and plasma spray technology were demonstrated, offering students a glimpse into modern material processing methods. The day-long visit left a deep impression on the students, who were amazed by the advanced research equipment and the innovative technologies being developed at the institute. They expressed admiration for the institute’s contributions to both national defense and economic growth. In 2013, the School of Materials at Shanghai Jiaotong University restructured its summer social practice programs, integrating them with professional education. This led to the formation of specialized groups such as the “State-Owned Enterprise Practice Group,” “Automobile Enterprise Social Practice Group,” and “Foreign Enterprise Social Practice Group.” These initiatives aim to enhance students’ understanding of industry practices while strengthening their professional identity and career awareness.
