Recently, Ms. Lu, a resident of Dashisixiang in Hongqiao Street, Xiaobei Road, reported that construction workers near her home often throw debris from high places, posing a serious safety risk to the community. Some stones have landed in the narrow alleys, causing residents to feel anxious and unsafe.
The reporter visited Dashisixiang, a narrow alley approximately one meter wide. On one side is the residential area, while on the other lies the construction site mentioned by Ms. Lu. Although no workers were visible on the scaffolding, the site was about two meters above the alley and had a wall-like structure made of scaffolding and safety nets. Some of the safety nets were torn or missing, exposing construction waste, with gravel and cement blocks scattered across the alley pavement. Local residents confirmed that the stones found in the alley were thrown from the construction site. One neighbor said, “If we clean it in the morning, it will be full again by evening.â€
At the corner of the alley, a fence over one meter tall was attached to the railings. Mr. Xiao, a local resident, explained that this is where workers frequently toss construction debris. He pointed to a scaffold on the fourth floor and mentioned that workers often throw scraps down from there. Even with the baffle in place, some stones still managed to fall into the alley. A few days ago, a stone about ten centimeters in diameter fell into the alley, and children often play in that area. Another nearby resident expressed concern, stating that the construction not only endangers their safety but also makes the alley extremely dirty.
The reporter noticed signs on the alley walls indicating “construction ahead, use detour,†but many residents refused to take the longer route. “Why make us walk around instead of ensuring the construction site follows proper safety protocols?†one resident asked.
The reporter then visited the sales office of the construction company. A female staff member acknowledged they had received complaints and had already contacted the sub-district office. She explained, “The detour sign was required by the street office.†When asked about the issue of high-altitude debris throwing, she stated that the company has strict rules for waste disposal. “I will report this to the company and remind the workers to be more careful.â€
Residents are calling for stricter enforcement of safety measures and better communication from the construction team to ensure their well-being and maintain the cleanliness of the neighborhood.
