In the jadeite industry, "water" is measured by how far light can penetrate through the stone. This is commonly referred to as "a few points of water." For example, one-point water means light passes through about 3 mm, two-point water around 6 mm, and three-point water up to 9 mm. The greater the depth of light penetration, the better the water quality. A piece of jade that’s 3 mm thick and completely transparent is considered to have three-point water.
Water in jadeite isn't just about clarity—it's also about the internal structure. It results from the way light interacts with the crystal grains, creating a hazy, deep, and smooth appearance. This effect is not found in other transparent materials like glass or quartz. Water is unique to jadeite and depends on factors such as grain size, structure, and purity.
Transparency is a physical property, but water is more than that. It's a combination of clarity, color, and the way light moves within the stone. A jade may be transparent but lack water if the internal structure doesn’t support it. Conversely, a jade with water will always be transparent, but not all transparent jades have water.
To enhance water, artisans use techniques like polishing and engraving. Polishing makes the surface smooth, allowing more light to enter. Engraving, especially on the back, helps direct light into the stone, improving its visual depth. In some cases, the back is inlaid with metal to reflect light and enhance the overall appearance, mimicking the effect of water.
However, there are limits. If the jade is too thin, it may appear clear but still lack water because light needs depth to create the desired optical interaction. Therefore, achieving good water requires balance—too much transparency without proper structure won't result in the same effect.
