TMEIC develops "Smart PV" technology

Toshiba Mitsubishi Electric Industrial Systems Inc. (TMEIC) recently demonstrated the “Smart PV” technology that optimizes the use of batteries in megawatt photovoltaic power plants at SMARTGRIDEXPO (February 26-28).

In regions where the capacity of power systems such as Hokkaido and Okinawa is relatively small, the combination of storage batteries and drastic changes in output power suppression have become necessary conditions for the construction of new megawatt photovoltaic power plants. Smart PV technology is striving to use a small capacity battery to suppress drastic changes in output power.

Smart PV technology is achieved through the "Main SIte Controller" that can optimize the overall PCS output power of a megawatt photovoltaic power plant, and battery PCS control.

Main SIte Controller refers to a control system that can manage multiple PCSs set in a megawatt photovoltaic power plant. It is easy to deal with the megawatt-class photovoltaic power station output power control implemented by the power company to stabilize the power system, which has attracted much attention.

Even if some solar panels inside a megawatt photovoltaic power plant are shaded, the output power of the PCS connected to the solar panel is reduced. As long as the PCS output power connected to other solar panels can exceed the rated power, the excess part can be directly sold. Electricity, the overall sales of megawatt photovoltaic power plants can maintain the specified capacity.

Combined with the use of the Main SIte Controller and the battery for control, the capacity of the battery for mitigating drastic changes in the output power of a megawatt photovoltaic power plant can be significantly reduced. According to TMEIC, the goal of installing a 4 MW battery for a 5 MW megawatt photovoltaic power station proposed by Hokkaido Electric Power Co., Ltd. can reduce the battery capacity to about 2.5 megawatts if TMEIC's Smart PV technology is used. .
