Tokyo University develops electric car technology with controllable front and rear wheels

A research team led by Associate Professor Fujimoto Bozhi of the Graduate School of Graduate Studies at the University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Innovation, in collaboration with Mitsubishi Motors, has successfully developed an electric vehicle technology capable of running smoothly on slippery roads, both in rain and cement and partially frozen roads. It can control the drive of the front and rear wheels separately, maintain the total driving force of the car, and keep the car body stable.

This technology allows the front wheel of the car to reach the critical point of slippage at the same time as the rear wheel reaches this critical point within a few seconds, implementing "previous control", that is, self-adjusting current and driving force once slippage is predicted. The technology uses the on-board motor and differential gear to drive the front and rear wheels independently. The driving force can be adjusted separately. Therefore, the total driving force of the car can be kept consistent. The driving experiment shows that the gravity of the electric vehicle applied to the human body is reduced from 5% to 2.5% compared with the average electric vehicle, and the swing brought about by the accelerated change is greatly reduced.

At present, only for the start of the car and to suppress the idling when accelerating research has been carried out, but the torque reduction problem has not yet come up with solutions, in the future experts will further study the acceleration, turning control technology, make the car running more stable and comfortable.
