Wallpaper moldy treatment

In today's home decoration trends, wallpapers are gaining more and more popularity. Compared to traditional latex paints, they offer a wide range of designs, are eco-friendly, and easy to clean. However, despite these benefits, many homeowners face an issue: mold on their wallpaper, especially in southern regions. The question is, why does this happen? One major reason for mold growth isn't the wallpaper itself, but rather the condition of the wall. In many parts of China, walls are not well-constructed and can easily develop moisture issues. PVC wallpapers, which don’t breathe well, combined with organic adhesives like rice flour glue, create the perfect environment for mold to grow. To prevent this, it's essential to use a high-quality moisture-resistant base film before applying the wallpaper. Another often-overlooked cause is improper installation. If the adhesive isn’t fully dried or if there’s a sudden temperature change between indoors and outdoors, it can lead to bubbling and trapped moisture behind the paper. This trapped moisture can eventually cause mold. After installing the wallpaper, it's important to keep the room closed for at least three days. After that, gently wipe off any excess glue in the seams with a damp cloth. Then, you can open the windows for proper ventilation. Also, make sure to soak the wallpaper before pasting it, as not doing so can increase the risk of mold. High humidity, especially during the rainy season in southern areas like Guangdong or Hainan, is another common cause of mold. Many people avoid wallpapering during this time, and for good reason. However, if you do choose to install it, be sure to maintain good airflow and avoid the peak of the rainy season. If mold has already appeared, what should you do? For large areas of mold, replacing the entire wallpaper is the best solution. For smaller spots, you can try wiping with soapy water or a mild detergent. A damp cloth with rubbing alcohol works well too. Gently scrubbing the affected area a couple of times usually helps. Another option is using bleach, though it can irritate the skin, so always wear gloves and rinse thoroughly afterward. Some may hesitate to use bleach out of fear it might damage the color, but there are specialized anti-mold treatments available that are safe for wallpaper. By understanding the causes and taking preventive measures, you can enjoy beautiful, long-lasting wallpaper without the worry of mold.
