Midea MD plans to study hybrid helicopters using 3D printing components

According to the China National Defense Science and Technology Information Network, MD Helicopters from the United States is exploring the possibility of manufacturing a hybrid helicopter model, and is also considering the use of 3D-printed components in its development. This new type of helicopter features a turboshaft engine but incorporates battery or solar power to support the avionics system, allowing the engine to focus solely on propulsion. By decoupling the power supply from the engine, the design aims to improve efficiency and reduce fuel consumption.

The company has adopted some design elements from the French Dassault System and is currently developing specialized software tailored for this innovative helicopter. The next phase of development will take place at a facility located in Massachusetts, USA, where advanced testing and production planning are expected to begin. This move underscores MD Helicopters’ commitment to integrating cutting-edge technology into its aircraft designs.

In addition to the hybrid project, MD Helicopters is also reevaluating its supply chain strategy. The company plans to shift the production of fuel tanks for its MD902 light helicopter from Turkey to the United States. According to a statement from the company: “We want to control our own destiny. Turkey produces parts that are too costly.” This decision reflects a broader trend among U.S. manufacturers to bring critical components back home in order to ensure quality, reduce costs, and maintain greater control over their operations.
