NEC develops new additives to improve lithium battery life

In December 2011, NEC Corporation has developed a technology that can more than double the life of manganese-based lithium-ion rechargeable batteries.
It is known that this technique is realized by adding a newly developed organic sulfur compound as an additive to an electrolyte constituting a battery, and using an electrode of a conventional manganese acid-based positive electrode and a carbon negative electrode in combination. It can be used not only in homes and buildings, but also in large-scale power storage systems that make power systems more durable and stable.
It is understood that NEC used this technology to prototype a battery with a capacity of 3.7 Ah, and predicted the life according to the energy consumption mode of ordinary households. The results show that the age of the rechargeable capacity can be reduced to 70% from the original 5 years to 13 years, and the initial 50% can be extended from about 15 years to 33 years, successfully extending the life by more than double. .
In addition, the battery-based technology developed this time is scheduled to be utilized in the project "Safety and Low-cost Large-Scale Power Storage System Technology Development" implemented by the Japan New Energy Industry Technology Development Organization (NEDO) in July 2011.
