In recent years, the low-voltage electrical industry has experienced remarkable growth opportunities. It is projected that the annual installed capacity will reach 21 GW between 2001 and 2010. Based on empirical matching ratios, approximately 480,000 low-voltage frame circuit breakers and 4.82 million molded case circuit breakers are required each year. Additionally, with government support for the export of mechanical and electrical products, the export volume has been consistently rising. As a result, the Chinese low-voltage electrical market is vast, growing rapidly, and holds very promising future prospects.
Market Structure
Domestic companies have advanced to the third generation of products, while foreign manufacturers have already introduced the fourth generation. China's low-voltage electrical industry has evolved from simple assembly and imitation manufacturing to self-developed design. ABB, for example, has developed nearly 1,000 series of low-voltage products, with around 1,500 production companies operating in the sector, generating an annual output value of approximately 20 billion yuan.
However, the domestic industry is characterized by a large number of small-scale enterprises, with over 90% focused on producing mid- to low-end products. The market currently sees the coexistence of three generations of products. According to output value, first-generation products hold a 15% market share, second-generation products account for 45%, and third-generation products make up 40%. With national policy driving further structural adjustments, outdated products—those with inefficient processes, large sizes, high energy consumption, and environmental impact—are expected to be phased out. By 2010, first-generation products are anticipated to be eliminated, second-generation products will shift to the lower end of the market, and third-generation products will gradually move into the mid-range segment.
While Chinese companies were accelerating the development and commercialization of third-generation products, several well-known international manufacturers launched their next-generation solutions from the late 1990s through the early 2000s. These include Schneider’s MT series, Siemens’ 3WL series, ABB’s E series, GE’s M-PACT series, and Kammer’s Magnum series for frame circuit breakers. For molded case circuit breakers, notable models include Schneider’s NS series, Siemens’ 3VL series, ABB’s Tmax series, GE’s Record Plus series, Moeller’s NZM series, Kammer’s G series, and Mitsubishi’s WS series.
These new-generation products feature advanced characteristics such as high performance, electronic control, intelligence, modularity, integration, and miniaturization. They also offer communication capabilities, high reliability, ease of maintenance, and environmental compliance. Most notably, they can be integrated with fieldbus systems, enabling full system networking and marking a significant qualitative improvement in the functionality of low-voltage electrical equipment.
