According to recent reports from the Australian Network, a woman from Sydney named Lvuka Howey has made headlines by converting her old diesel car into a hybrid vehicle that runs on both diesel and vegetable oil. This innovative move not only helps reduce her carbon footprint but also cuts down on fuel costs.
Howey’s vehicle is a 1986 Toyota Land Cruiser, which she found to be inefficient and environmentally unfriendly. To make it more sustainable, she decided to retrofit it with a conversion kit that allows it to run on used cooking oil. The system heats the vegetable oil to an optimal temperature before switching from diesel to the alternative fuel source.
"Before I switch from diesel to vegetable oil, I usually drive about five kilometers first," Howey explained. "Then, I switch back to diesel five kilometers before the end of my trip. This helps protect the engine and prevents any residue from clogging the system."
Although her vegetable oil-powered car still emits some carbon dioxide, it's significantly better for the environment compared to traditional diesel vehicles. Additionally, using waste oil is much cheaper than buying regular fuel. "I get the oil from local restaurants," she said. "At first, the owners were a bit embarrassed to give it away, but now they’re happy to help out."
Despite being free, the process of collecting and handling the waste oil takes time and effort. Howey also mentioned that the conversion device itself cost over 3,000 Australian dollars. She emphasized that simply pouring used oil into the tank isn’t enough—there are specific systems and modifications required to make it work safely and effectively.
Her story highlights how everyday people can make a difference by thinking creatively about sustainability. With a little effort and investment, it's possible to turn waste into energy and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Howey’s project serves as an inspiring example of what individuals can do to contribute to a greener future.
