In a unique move to embrace sustainability, a Sydney-based woman named Lvuka Howey has transformed her 1986 Toyota Land Cruiser into a hybrid vehicle that runs on both diesel and vegetable oil. According to reports from the Australian Network, this innovative approach not only helps reduce fuel costs but also minimizes environmental impact.
Howey explains that her old diesel-powered car was neither efficient nor environmentally friendly, prompting her to seek an alternative. She installed a conversion kit that heats the vegetable oil to the right temperature before automatically switching from diesel to the plant-based fuel. "Before I switch to vegetable oil, I usually drive about 5 kilometers first," she says. "Then, I switch back to diesel 5 kilometers before the end of my trip. This helps protect the engine and prevents any residue from clogging the system."
Although her vegetable oil-powered car still emits carbon dioxide, it's significantly more eco-friendly compared to traditional diesel vehicles. Additionally, using waste vegetable oil is much cheaper than buying diesel, making it a practical choice for cost-conscious drivers.
Howey sources her vegetable oil from local restaurants, though she admits the process can be a bit awkward at times. "When restaurant owners first hear I want their waste oil, they're often embarrassed," she laughs. "It’s free, but it takes time and effort to collect and manage it properly."
The conversion itself wasn’t cheap—costing over 3,000 Australian dollars. "It’s not just about pouring waste oil into the tank," she emphasizes. "There’s a whole system involved to make it work safely and effectively."
Her story highlights how everyday people can make a difference by thinking creatively and taking small steps toward a greener future.
