In 2014, global car sales are expected to reach yet another record high. According to a survey conducted by the University of Duisburg in Essen, the global new car sales growth rate is approximately 5%, while China's growth rate is projected to hit 11%. This impressive performance places China at the top of the world in terms of car sales. Similar to the previous year, China’s car sales continue to surpass those of the United States. With such strong market demand, Chinese automakers are increasingly aware of the need to boost production efficiency. The question remains: what kind of equipment can significantly enhance productivity? Let’s explore the new modular solutions presented by the EMAG Group at the 2014 CIMES exhibition.
The China International Machine Tool & Tools Exhibition (CIMES 2014) took place from June 18 to 22, 2014, at the Beijing New International Exhibition Center. During this event, the EMAG Group showcased its latest modular machine tools that have become highly popular among customers. These machines are designed with compact structures and integrate cutting processes with automatic loading and unloading technology, maximizing production efficiency.
EMAG’s advanced integrated automation systems make these modular devices ideal for high-volume production, particularly for automotive transmissions that require precision machining and large-scale manufacturing. The modular concept simplifies production and offers flexibility for various applications.
One of the standout models on display was the EMAG VL 2 inverted automatic loading and unloading lathe. Designed for manufacturers and distributors who prioritize quality and cost-effectiveness, this lathe combines a small footprint, excellent cost-performance, and automated loading/unloading capabilities. It is especially well-suited for machining chuck parts efficiently.
The VL 2 lathe features a compact structure, making it easy to integrate into any production line. It can process discs such as planetary gears and flange assemblies up to 100 mm in diameter and 150 mm in length. The loading and unloading spindle automatically picks up blanks from an integrated conveyor belt (capable of transporting 24 workpieces) and returns finished parts back to the belt. The turret can be equipped with up to 12 power tools, allowing for turning, drilling, and milling operations during the machining process. The bed, made from MINERALIT® premium minerals, ensures stability and vibration resistance, contributing to high-quality results. Overall, the VL 2 delivers the shortest machining cycle and the highest level of accuracy.
Another notable model was the VT 2-4 inverted vertical shaft automatic loading and unloading lathe, which complements the VL 2, especially in transmission production, such as gear shaft manufacturing. This four-axis lathe is ideal for machining shafts up to 100 mm in diameter and 400 mm in length. Its modular design ensures high output and efficient operation. The workpiece is gripped by the turret jaws, and the automatic loading and unloading process reduces cycle time and lowers per-unit production costs. The machine can also process parts from both sides simultaneously, with two turrets each equipped with 12 tool positions for milling.
While these modular machines perform well individually, their true potential shines when integrated into a complete production line. Their compact design, combined with integrated blank delivery and automated loading/unloading, makes it easy to build customized production lines for different automotive components. For example, transferring blanks between machines only requires a simple conveyor belt and a flip unit, eliminating the need for complex automation systems.
Additionally, the O-type automated conveyor system enables efficient workpiece transport and loading/unloading through dedicated spindles. Optional measuring probes outside the processing area allow for real-time quality monitoring, ensuring that each part is automatically measured before being returned to the conveyor belt. This enhances overall process control and product consistency.
Whether it’s the VL 2 or the VT 2-4, EMAG’s modular solutions offer a powerful way to optimize and reorganize production. These machines not only improve efficiency but also support mass production of critical automotive components, such as electric motor shafts.
With the growing demand for cars worldwide, especially in China, the role of advanced manufacturing technologies like EMAG’s modular equipment becomes even more crucial. By investing in smart, flexible, and high-performance machinery, automakers can meet rising market demands while maintaining quality and cost efficiency.
