Academician He Wei, a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, recently shared his insights on the future of new energy during an interview. According to him, the main focus of new energy development will be on solar and nuclear energy. He emphasized that in the photovoltaic industry, third-generation photovoltaic technology is set to replace the earlier generations, bringing higher efficiency and lower costs.
He also highlighted the importance of building solar energy storage facilities on water surfaces. This approach, he said, is cost-effective and helps avoid the use of arable land, making it a sustainable solution for energy production.
The third-generation photovoltaic technology involves a combination of solar-smelting silicon, tracking systems, spotlights, and high-efficiency concentrating silicon batteries. What makes this technology stand out is its green features—being environmentally friendly, efficient, low-cost, and long-lasting. The key element is solar silicon, which uses solar energy rather than electricity, resulting in near-zero pollution.
In the field of nuclear energy, He supports its development but prefers it to be located offshore. "We hope nuclear energy can be harnessed at sea," he said. "It can provide unlimited power for our naval forces and warships, enhancing national security."
Regarding electric vehicles, He believes that the focus should be on small and medium-sized models suitable for towns and rural areas. These vehicles should be compact, with a battery range of over 120 kilometers and a top speed exceeding 80 km/h. They should also be able to carry 3–4 passengers or cargo weighing between 200–400 kilograms.
He also discussed the potential of rear-wheel electric vehicles, which could combine hub motors, energy storage systems, and vehicle carriers. Hub motors, he suggested, could be standardized by independent research institutions, eliminating the need for complex transmission systems. This would allow for easier installation and scalability of power systems. By increasing the number of motor units, electric vehicles could achieve greater performance, provided the chassis technology is improved accordingly.
