Energy-saving lamps, also known as compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), work with an electronic ballast that plays a key role in their operation. When the lamp is turned on, the ballast first heats the filament inside the lamp. This heating process causes the filament to emit electrons, which are then accelerated and collide with argon gas atoms within the lamp tube. These collisions generate energy, which in turn excites the mercury atoms inside the tube. As the mercury atoms absorb this energy, they become ionized, forming a plasma state.
Once the plasma is formed, the voltage across the lamp passes through it, causing the mercury vapor to emit ultraviolet light at a wavelength of approximately 253.7 nanometers. This UV light then interacts with the phosphor coating on the inside of the glass tube. The phosphor absorbs the UV light and re-emits it as visible light, making the lamp glow.
One of the main advantages of energy-saving lamps is their lower operating temperature compared to traditional incandescent bulbs. While incandescent lamps operate at around 2200K to 2700K, CFLs typically run at about 1160K. This reduced heat not only increases the lifespan of the lamp—often exceeding 5,000 hours—but also improves energy efficiency. With an efficiency of over 50 lumens per watt, these lamps use significantly less power than incandescent bulbs, making them a more sustainable lighting option.
