During a recent incident, one of our aluminum alloy elevator racks broke during routine handling operations. The affected rack was made from 60 steel and had undergone the standard heat treatment process of low-temperature tempering following normalization. A detailed examination of the fractured rack revealed a characteristic river-pattern fracture, a hallmark of cleavage fracture. Microscopic observations and energy spectrum analyses were conducted, alongside metallurgical structure evaluations. Further chemical composition and mechanical property assessments were carried out to pinpoint the root cause of the failure.

The river-pattern fracture indicates a brittle fracture triggered by an impact load. Analyzing the heat treatment process, we identified the primary culprit as improper heating and cooling procedures. Specifically, the normalizing heating temperature was set too high, resulting in the formation of coarse austenite grains. The subsequent rapid cooling method led to the precipitation of pro-eutectoid ferrite in a network-like pattern along the austenite grain boundaries. Comparing the fractured rack with an intact one, the networked ferrite distribution was evident in both cases, though the intact rack exhibited coarser grain structures.

These findings underscore the importance of adhering to optimal heat treatment protocols. In this instance, improper heating and cooling practices led to a coarse grain structure and a networked ferrite distribution, contributing to the rack's fracture.
